On 12 October on the Indonesian island resort of Bali, two explosions in close succession ruptured the tropical night air killing 191 people, mostly tourists, who were out for a night on the town. Several locals also perished. The devastation spanned over a block of popular Kuta, a southwest coastal resort town bracketed by hotels, restaurants, bars, shops, and dance clubs. Indonesia and the international community were shocked. Bali, a world renowned tourist destination and major moneymaker for Indonesia, was traditionally off-limits to the country's seemingly constant cycle of violence that began during the Asian economic crisis of 1997.
